Never Hold Back

One of the most humiliating mistakes I have ever made took place in my work environment. As a freelancer, I take on jobs of every sort. One in particular had me very excited, but the sheer amount of work scared me a bit as well. Instead of leaping at the chance, I dragged my feet and slowly dredged out replies – a horrible mistake in hindsight. Naturally someone else was chosen for the position over me, even though I had been one of the top choices.
No matter what job a person has, lagging behind is one of the worst mistakes to make. No matter how good a person is at their work, there is simple always someone who is more able, more available, more competitive, or more willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. It’s a hard mistake to make, and harder to realize that there isn’t anyone else to blame for it but yourself. To make it easier to bear, I decided to look at what could be learned from such a mistake. The lesson in this is simple. Always go for opportunities that present themselves, never hold back on anything. It might cost you a job, your pride, or a great opportunity. Always apply yourself, because missing out on it is so much worse than at least trying for it. It is better to say that you have tried for something and failed rather than saying that you were simply too scared to even try.
