Getting Hit By Car

On my way to work, I was walking fast. Late as usual. If I kept up with the steady quick pace, I just might make it on time, I thought. Only 10 minutes away, I was focused on getting there on time and no time for distractions. I was in a bad mood and wouldn’t even take a second to smile at passer-byes. Then from behind me, I hear someone shout in a cheery voice, “Hey there!” I turn my head over my shoulder and glance at the guy with the big smile on his face and wide open hopeful eyes. Oh great, it’s him! That annoying guy who talks too much and probably wants to waste my time talking about anything and everything that I am not interested and have no time for!

So I ignore him and step up my pace. I hear his footsteps getting closer behind me. I walk even faster. At this point I am nearly jogging. Doesn’t he get the point that I seriously don’t want to talk to him? I’m so upset and I actually think of ways I could be even ruder to him. I am approaching a street corner that I’m about to cross. Still walking excitingly fast I turn my head back to him, and yell, “I don’t have time to talk to you!” I glare at him, to let him know that I am not in the mood to be nice. For about 2 seconds I am not looking where I’m going. Enraptured in my hurried anger, I am oblivious of my surroundings and, boom!

My feet are no longer on the ground, my face meets a windshield of a car, I’m rolling in the air, and then there is a thud of a body banging to the concrete. It’s me laying there on the ground. I realize I was hit by a car and am now lying in the middle of the street. This was definitely my fault. I wasn’t looking where I was going because I became overly involved with unnecessary rudeness, anger, and impatience. I learned the literally hardest way, that no matter what kind of hurry you are in, and no matter how much you don’t like someone, it is not worth it to loose awareness of where you are and what you are doing.
If you lose touch with reality, reality may just have to hit you to the ground for a much needed wake-up call.
