Getting Deported

I was living in the USA and wanted to visit my boyfriend who lived in Canada. At that time the laws had just recently changed stating that you had to have a birth certificate if not a passport to cross the border. Before I left my house to get to the airport, I couldn’t find my birth certificate. I didn’t think it was a big deal so went to the airport without it. I thought that my driver’s license and my social security card would be enough. I bought a one way ticket on the bus and when I got to the customs check in Canada I was interrogated. They didn’t trust that I had only bought a one way ticket and that I had neither a passport nor a birth certificate and only had a few dollars in my pocket. They held my things and put me in a cab to return me back to the USA before I could get my stuff back. Now I was stranded and didn’t know what to do. It was such a big mistake to not spend an extra five minutes to find my birth certificate and assume that I would just be lucky. I learned that I better have my stuff together and organized before venturing off into the unknown.
