The fine line between discipline and abuse

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” Psalm 32:8

Back in the days, corporal punishment was tolerated in different cultures, countries and communities. Those were the days, before United Nations signed the “Rights of a Child” document which aimed to protect the rights of children world-wide, when children were flagged for their small sins, made to kneel on sand and salt, and starved to death for making mistakes. It took decades to correct the stigma that these actions were appropriate in disciplining children. In the past decade, more laws were created in favor of protecting children, and laws that prohibited corporal punishment in school and at home. I once made the mistake of spanking my child for inappropriate behavior. It was a mistake I paid for in the years that followed.

I grew up receiving corporal punishment myself. Inadvertently, I did the same thing to my child. I vowed when I was small, that I would not make the same mistake with my children. Psychologists said that parents who received corporal punishment were more likely to make the same mistake, when they became parents themselves.

That study is correct in so many ways. I did not want to do it, unconsciously my brain automatically manifested the behavior I wanted to avoid, but I ended up doing something I hated the most. I received counseling to correct my parenting mistake and was able to fix my disciplining style using a more positive approach. I asked forgiveness from my child and we made amends. This is a mistake I did in my life and I hope you learned a lot from my personal experience.

Being a parent is a challenging task, we must find creative ways to teach the valuable lessons in life the kids have to learn and correct behavior in a positive way, no matter what. The kids and I are now closer than ever. <3 We do things not because it is required of us, but because we give God glory in the things we do for each other. <3
