Be Happy with Yourself

Body image is a conflicting topic in media today. Women’s bodies especially are constantly under fire for being too skinny, too large, too muscular, or basically any other reason that someone can think of. In a world of such scrutiny, it can be hard to just be comfortable in your own skin. With so many poisonous picture-perfect bodies presented it becomes increasingly difficult to accept yourself the way you are. I made the mistake of buying into ‘the perfect body’ that media tries to present.

As a teenage girl with body issues, I was incredibly susceptible to earning boys approval. Naturally this led me down an awful path. I let what immature, silly teenage boys thought of my body to influence my feelings of self-worth. When I was rejected because my body had too many curves, or because I wasn’t under 100lbs I went into a downward spiral of depression. My obsession with my body image became so bad that I developed an eating disorder and dropped 35lbs in two months. It was so bad that I ended up giving myself a heart condition that I now have for the rest of my life. And for what? Because I fell into the trap that somehow the way my body looks is what I am worth as a person. I spent years trying to get back to a healthy weight and a healthy mindset. I learned a lifelong lesson that I am still learning and teaching to my daughters: Love yourself for who you are. What others think of you has no bearing on how amazing you are as a person. The way you look does not define who you are as a person. No matter what shape or size or color you come in, you are beautiful. Learn to be happy in your own skin, because you will have it for the rest of your life.
